About Grace
History
Founded in 1986, Grace Brethren Christian
School began as a preschool, adding a grade every year. Beginning in May
of 1994, the School began the accreditation process under the
direction of its Headmaster, Pastor Jeff Thornley, then
Director, Mrs. Cynthia Thornley. The school received accreditation in 1996 for its
programs up to and including seventh grade. In 2002, the school completed
the process of re-accreditation by ACSI and Middle States, which extended
through twelfth grade. The 17-acre campus has grown continually since
1986, adding new classrooms as needed and a state-of-the-art
facility for extracurricular activities. There are currently over 80
staff members serving in full-time or part-time positions. This includes
office and administrative staff members; preschool and kindergarten
staff; elementary and secondary teachers. The staff also includes 11
specialists and seven full-time assistants. The staff is extremely
dedicated and highly skilled.
GBCS is located on 17 acres, and is easily
accessible by major routes (Rt. 5, 301).
There are two fully-equipped, fenced playgrounds; a regulation-size
soccer field - complete with aluminum bleachers to seat several hundred
spectators and an electronic scoreboard; and picnic tables throughout
the campus for outdoor dining. We have just completed the final phase of
a 40,000 sq. foot building. This facility contains two state-of-the-art
science labs, a state-of-the-art art lab, a fully-equipped
gymnasium, 13 additional classrooms, an administrative wing and a
teacher work area.
Our facility is
handicapped-accessible
throughout, which includes an elevator. We currently have three school buses for field trips, sports events and school activities.
In the summer of 2009 GBCS
officially changed their name to Grace
Christian Academy of Maryland.
